Benthic Space

A non-contiguous area of three-dimensional space, defined as all points which have no significant stellar bodies within ten light years' distance. The Belated History Effect is most pronounced when its shortest path traverses large regions of Benthic Space.

Early sub-light colonisation craft used optic flow principles to navigate Benthic Space, although this technology was abandoned after the Jatok Fleet was lost, and it was recognised that Benthic Space was far more unpredictable than first imagined.

The sector of Benthic Space known as the Grey Zone became tactically significant towards the end of the Orbital Wars, although it was never successfully colonised.
