"Natural selection did not anticipate the motor car, and trying to read in a car on a winding road fools the eye-ear reflex completely. The reflex tries to compensate for the signals coming from the ear, but the book and the head are actually moving together, so these compensatory movements succeed only in moving the image of the book on the eye. The brain signals its displeasure by making us want to vomit, perhaps because failure of the vestilubo-ocular reflex is usually an early-warning sign that we have been poisoned."
Excellent explanation from The Space Between Our Ears as to why I can't read on buses, and why I would just become slightly more vulnerable to public-transport bioterror attacks if I bothered learning to correct it.  ]

 Monday  the Twenty-First

"I think something's got into it."
  "Like gin?"
"Like it's being updated..."
A third radio series of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide is unexpectedly ready for broadcast in September, and Peter Jones segues poignantly and perfectly into William Franklyn (who's already cut his teeth delivering a few Guide references as the Peter Jones-y computer voice in Startopia). Douglas Adams makes a pre-recorded audiobook-lifted appearance as Agrajag in his last body, his last life, and everyone else sounds significantly older. After a decade of every Internet geek listing the Guide series as their five favourite books, I'd almost forgotten how huge and influential the books and radio series were to me, from the middle of nowhere, fifteen years ago. All very mournful.

But amazing to hear new words over the old music; bigger, I think, than the forthcoming film. Radio always wins.  ]
