Brighton gallery Fabrica currently has a
giant
wireframe West Pier hanging from its ceiling, a network
of tied rope and string and human hair, a monstrous architectural
jellyfish threatening to reach down and snare onlookers. The
shape is obsolete - the real pier's concert hall is now
collapsed and half-submerged - but this only happened the
day before the exhibition opened.
(Visually, it makes a very strong argument for scrubbing down the
West Pier's girders and putting some lighting in - they had some
beautiful night-lit photos of the rope version. A pity that the
gallery shuts at six.)
And I was too late for all the tangential events, including a
screening of what seems to be a 1962 zombie-pier film
Carnival
of Souls.
