backs are the defensive players. Most four-player teams operate with two backs, whose job is to sabotage the opposing team's attacks with simple tactics such as the
huff, or more intricately worked combinations. Defensive backs are also occasionally involved in attacks, often arriving suddenly to win the game. Backs account for about 10% of MC team victories: although the famous Earl's Court MCC and England back of the 50's,
Ian Hoile, played the winning move in an incredible 31% of his team's victories, while holding a fearsome defensive record.
