The name of the nationalised company that ran the national rail network in England, Scotland and Wales from 1948 to 1996. The privatised companies now running the trains are now collectively described as '
National Railways' on the LU map. The track and signalling are owned by another privatised company called
Railtrack. Nevertheless, play on the network is still generally referred to as
British Rail play, and competition for
ticket stubs can be intense at those stations which function as interchanges between London Underground and British Railways.
