(1935–2002)

A well-followed maverick of the 60s, Vavrinec Czukay was legendary for his elaborate and cutting-edge style of play, combining obscure and forgotten moves from the 1920s with the latest tournament-legal amendments to produce innovative and frequently incomprehensible networks of moves and counter-plays.

Czukay is perhaps best remembered for the unrepeatable Czukay Manipulation, which took him into a surprise semi-final position in the 1965 World Championship.
