So-called because it actually stretches outside the boundaries of London itself, and none-too-infrequently pops up above ground, the London Underground 'tube' network is the basic board of the modern-day game of Mornington Crescent.

While a lot of amateurs confine themselves solely to the Underground as a matter of principle, many of the greatest games have taken place either completely or at least partly at street level. For instance, street level play would have been completely unavoidable before the Underground was built. Nevertheless, the Underground is now accepted as the true home of the game.
