The
Morgenstern Variant (named after the famous game theorist Oskar Morgenstern) is a fairly unknown move which is nonetheless part of most
Rulesets. It allows the player to set a
Break Point at a specific station.
If used wisely, this is a very useful and dangerous move, but it has some limitations involving the Home Station.
1. If the player has a Home Station, they are not allowed to use the Morgenstern Variant.
- It is, however, possible, to remove the Home Station with the penalty of removing a Token from the nearest station.
2. The player is not allowed to declare a Home Station in the current game after using the Morgenstern Variant.
Because of these limitations, the usefulness of the Morgenstern Variant is disputable, but there is no doubt that it should be tried at least once.
