The nib is the modern and more hygienic descendant of the cod piece. Being the nib holder carries with it a variety of privileges, some of which date back to the early 19th century, but there are also a number of traditional obligations which may be more or less onerous depending on the precise ruleset in use. Nibs usually pass around the table in the opposite direction to play, generally moving at a constant rate. Losing the nib ahead of one's turn can carry a hefty forfeit, and may cause a player to be placed in spoon.
