A
home station which has been surrounded by several
suspect packages is said to be in
spong. If the packages are successfully detonated, the station is likely to become
blocked. In practice it is not usually necessary to use actual explosive devices for this purpose; a bag of smelly socks or a past-its-best sample of fish will often do equally well. The latter represents an innovative modern use for the
cod piece, if one is in play.
