The Chilean squid monster has been disappointingly unmasked as a dead whale, and not twenty-nine thousand rubber ducks after all. Comments? ]

Pleasingly, a Google search for the phrase "you left your umbrella" turns up a number of mailing lists full of spam robots talking to one another, where all humans have long since perished. This is what the Internet will look like, when we're all wiped out by a killer alien virus. Comments? ]
I often wonder whether the deceptively chatty subject lines of Viagra spam are evolving or not; that every successful click or purchase increases the fitness of the relevant subject line, and that the sort of people who eagerly open emails from total strangers who "saw them today" are of the same demographic who think they need Viagra.

If this is happening, then I've just received the most hopeful, hopeful monster in the world (and was momentarily reluctant to strike such a fragile beauty from the gene pool) - "You left your umbrella." Comments? ]
The absolute best thing about the current Alistair Campbell imbroglio is the shifty self-referentiality of the BBC news, as it reports on the decisions and reactions of the BBC as a whole. Newsreader Huw Edwards telling us that "the BBC has cast doubt on this new allegation", casting doubt on the new allegation as he does so. Comments? ]

 Tuesday  the Eighth

It can be troublingly easy to break into your own house, when you need to. Admittedly insider knowledge counts for a lot, but it's bad to be wandering around the place where you live, feeling quite optimistic that someone's left a window open, or that you've possibly forgotten to lock the back door; when your house's breakability stops being vague and hypothetical, it becomes a lot more vulnerable. Try getting home without using any keys, tomorrow. Comments? ]
"At 7:12, we burst into thunderous, screaming applause for 15 seconds, and then dispersed, just as police cars came screaming around the corner to where we were." - the inexplicable mobs continue to spread and evolve. [via Erik] Comments? ]
