The
compass trick is an advanced – and frequently costly – manœuvre that allows a player to
strile from one station to another, provided both stations include a compass direction in their names. For example, it would be possible to move from North Acton to South Acton, an otherwise rather expensive move. Players must take close account of
line velocity,
spin and
helical stress when performing this manœuvre, as the token cost of performing it depends on these factors as well as the relative directions of the two stations chosen. Theoretically, in the absence of other complicating factors, a move from 'North' to 'North' would usually be cheapest, while the cost of of a 270° East-to-South strile in the opposite direction to the prevailing spin and helical stress would be ruinously expensive. In the latter case a
pivot would be a far more sensible play.
