The strat is a technical term referring to the number of lines crossed during a straddle or transverse shunt. In practice there is usually very little ambiguity in referring to the number of lines crossed simply as 'the number of lines crossed', however mathematicians will rightly note that it is nonsensical to refer to a fraction of a line, while it is quite possible for the strat to have a fractional value.
