A
temporal strile is a common way to exploit the slight variances in station names over the long lifespan of the London Underground network. The method is usually to
strile to a
foetal or
ghost station and invoke the corresponding
ruleset (that is, a ruleset contemporary with the newly-selected station) at the same time. A clever example of this is the use of
Tottenham Court Road to block a play of
Goodge Street – otherwise a winning move – by invoking the
Pre-1908 Tottenham Court Road Rules. That example is particularly elegant because an opponent occupying the target station (Goodge Street) is involuntary transferred to the original Tottenham Court Road, from which access to the northbound Northern line (and thus Mornington Crescent) is suddenly blocked, at no additional cost to the striling player.
