When the station first opened on 22nd June 1907, it was at the site now renamed to Goodge Street. Oxford Street – now a ghost station – was renamed to Tottenham Court Road on March 9th, 1908, the same day that the original Tottenham Court Road was renamed to Goodge Street. For this reason, a play of Tottenham Court Road is a common way to counter to a play of Goodge Street which would otherwise be an almost unstoppable winning move. See Pre-1908 Tottenham Court Road Rules and temporal strile for further details.
