If the helical stress across the manifold exceeds a threshold value (usually in the region of 30–50 Brians), formerly stable token stacks may spontaneously begin to move across the map in an unpredictable way. This is caused by the presence of token vortices. A token stack caught in a token vortex is effectively out of play until the helical stress reduces sufficiently, although with luck and good timing it is sometimes possible to capture a stack by means of a Crossmead Spiral or a well-executed ratache.

In Ruttsborough-style games, a particularly evil trick is to peg a vortex, thereby perpetuating it. However, this manœuvre also causes the vortex to become fixed in place, which means any player in the area could collect whatever tokens the vortex may contain.
