Laterals are used in several different contexts during a game of Mornington Crescent. For example, a
strile that is neither
diagonal nor
parallel is said to be
lateral. (Contrast this with the
oblique as it pertains to
shunts and
straddles.)
Hop-striles and
understriles are usually performed as lateral moves because this is a more efficient use of
tokens. Laterals are also useful when performing a
compass trick.
