Laterals are used in several different contexts during a game of Mornington Crescent. For example, a strile that is neither diagonal nor parallel is said to be lateral. (Contrast this with the oblique as it pertains to shunts and straddles.) Hop-striles and understriles are usually performed as lateral moves because this is a more efficient use of tokens. Laterals are also useful when performing a compass trick.
